How to Replace a Bathtub Spout

You can replace a bathtub spout easily as a DIY task, particularly after water damage occurs. Here’s a detailed guide on how to do it effectively.

To replace your bathtub spout, you’ll need several tools and materials. These include a caulk gun, rag, new spout, silicone caulk, thread seal tape, and a threaded nipple among others. Before you start, make sure you have all these items ready. The spout replacement process can be quick, but having everything prepared will make the job smoother.

Determining the type of spout you have is the first step. Bathtub spouts are either slip-on or screw-on. Slide slip-on spouts over the pipe and secure them with a set screw. Screw-on spouts, on the other hand, screw onto a threaded nipple. To identify your spout type, you’ll need to remove the old spout first.

Removing the Existing Spout

Start by cutting through any caulk sealing the spout to the wall. Use a utility knife for this. Next, check for a set screw on the underside of the spout. If there is one, it’s a slip-on spout. Use a hex wrench to loosen the set screw and pull off the spout. Twist the spout as you pull to avoid loosening connections inside the wall. If there’s no set screw, it’s a screw-on spout. Use slip-lock pliers to turn it counterclockwise. It might take some effort, but once it’s loose, you can unscrew it by hand. If the spout is a screw-on type, you might need to remove the nipple.

The nipple is the pipe sticking out from the wall where the spout attaches. Slip-on spouts typically have a smooth copper pipe soldered to a fitting behind the wall for the nipple. While you are in the position to make changes, inspect the wall for mold growth too.

For slip-on spouts, loosen the set screw on the new spout using a hex wrench or Phillips screwdriver. De-burr the end of the stub-out pipe with a file to make it smooth. Slip the spout onto the pipe and push it all the way to the wall. Tighten the set screw securely to prevent the spout from rotating or slipping off. Finally, apply a bead of silicone caulk around the base of the spout to seal it to the wall. This prevents water from seeping behind the wall, which can cause damage over time.

Installing the New Spout

Prepare for the new spout once you have removed the old one. If you need to replace the nipple, wrap plumbing thread tape around both ends of the new nipple. This helps prevent leaks. Screw the nipple into the fitting behind the wall, tightening it with pliers or an internal pipe wrench. For screw-on spouts, screw the new spout onto the nipple and tighten it by hand. Use a rag to protect the finish and continue tightening with pliers. Ensure the back end is flush against the wall. If it isn’t, replace the nipple with one that’s shorter.

Replacing a bathtub spout is a straightforward DIY task. It requires basic tools and a little bit of know-how. By following these steps, you can refresh the look of your tub and ensure it functions properly. Remember to determine your spout type, remove the old spout carefully, and install the new one securely. With a bit of effort, you can achieve professional results and extend the life of your bathtub. If your home is in need of a new bathroom, contact ASAP Restoration for help today!
